Bharat Soka Gakkai
Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG) is an organization engaged in various activities under the umbrella of peace, culture, education, and sustainability. To build a sustainable age by 2030, BSG launched the ‘BSG for SDG’ initiative in 2021, with the motto: ‘Towards 2030: Achieving SDGs through Sustainable Human Behaviour.’ Under this initiative, BSG is undertaking a host of activities to spread greater awareness on the role of ordinary individuals in creating a culture of sustainability and hand-build a world where no life is left behind.
The “Seeds of Hope & Action” (SOHA) exhibition is a joint initiative of the Soka Gakkai International & the Earth Charter International. It stresses our interconnectedness with the rest of the community of life and the need to broaden our sphere of compassion. It urges viewers to adopt ‘Sustainable Human Behaviour’ (SHB) as a way of life. SHB is essentially an inner transformation in the depths of one’s life – bringing mindfulness and consideration towards others who are at the forefront – be it other humans, animals, birds, environment, laws, institutions, etc.
Reena Rai
Potter
Credited with being the first woman to start a ceramic studio in the entire North East region, Reena Rai has successfully ushered pottery ware into Sikkim’s cultural heritage, while, most importantly, promoting local craftsmanship and enterprise. A former Montessori teacher, Reena embarked into the entirely novel venture of studio pottery armed with the objective to create something that was not only quintessentially Sikkimese – from start to finish – but also self-reliant, sustainable and driven wholly by local craftsmanship. Fascinated by the abundant availability of rich, red clay soil of Kitam, South Sikkim (also the place where her ancestral roots lie), Reena conceived the idea of starting a pottery unit in this village. After training in a Master Potter course in Khanapur, Belgaum, internships at Goa and Pondicherry, she returned to Sikkim and set up ‘Studio MAATO’ as a full-fledged production studio in December 2008. Simultaneously, she also trained numerous local women to help empower them with a new livelihood skill. Though trained only in traditional pottery in Khanapur, Reena has explored and mastered the advanced skills of glaze preparation and different firing techniques through trial and error in her own studio at Kitam . She now produces high quality glazed ceramic wares which include functional household items, souvenirs, art objects and ceramic installations.
Since September 2017, Reena has extended her production studio at Pakyong, East Sikkim as part of her vision to reach MAATO to every corner of the state where it was born and she also conducts Pottery workshops to locals and tourists .
Sunita Lama

The workshop, ‘Tapping into the Bodymind’ is a sacred space where participants will be led to explore the intricate interplay of the mind and body and recognize the interconnected facets of our being. Through mindful movement, somatic experiencing, breath work and expressive arts, participants will delve into the depths of their inner selves awakening dormant potentials, releasing stagnant energies and discovering innate wisdom. This transformative odyssey and discovery of the union of the body and mind and a journey of self-discovery and holistic wellness.
Lakshmi Venugopal
Facilitator of Deep Ecology and the Work That Reconnects
She is with Inner Climate Academy (ICA), Lakshmi Venugopal brings her diverse international experience in the environment field spanning two decades, from activist to project manager to researcher to facilitator. She believes that the ecological and climate emergency that we face at this moment in history, is an opportunity for human beings, as a species, to transform ourselves into an ecological civilization that honours the Earth and all living beings (including fellow humans).
She is an experienced facilitator of Deep Ecology and the Work That Reconnects. Her sessions help people rediscover their profound connection to themselves, each other and the Earth. Her research on the concept of eco-civilisation, following the work of Freya Mathews, and her deep inquiry into multispecies learning and coexistence, forms a fertile ground from which the vision for ICA flows.
In her words “Old civilisations of the world, whose philosophies of engagement with the living Universe were developed far before industrialisation may still hold clues to principles of biomimetic engagement with the universe. These principles, when recovered, could be used to lay the foundational philosophy for an Eco-Civilisation. This requires an inter- civilisational dialogue – to remember and renovate old ideas in new forms that will contribute to a re-awakening of human civilisations through a re-engagement with the living Universe, each through their own unique narratives, yet together in their goal of Eco-Civilisation.”

Bindya Subba
Artist- Painter
Sees herself as an arcane oil painter, one that leaves her hermit hut studio, looking for a story to paint. The hermit hut houses her collectibles of seasons, sometimes it’s a morning or evening raga, sometimes a ceramic mould glistening in the shadows, glass wares carrying scent baths of the forests , river stones heralding an erosive journey of its own, palm leaves now objectified, bamboo holdings for medicinal herbs, bamboo rattles, and miniature plants making their own transactions with spaces, salvaged wooden pieces, and paintings that have survived in her timeline of creation.
Modelled after the hermit living of old tapovans or forest schools, of an unknown village with no claims to learning culture and history. The birthplace of her many seminal thoughts.
A life she has created for herself as a painter by living inside the raw canopy of her contact with this forest school by itself , and the vicinity close by .
The philosophy of having just about enough, two squares of meals, a blank canvas, paintbrushes, paints, garbs of white khadi, and wooden crafted slippers .
The intention of living in frugality like the rural landscape around it - So frugal are the needs of the mind that asks for liberation, by being in close contact with the rural villages and keeping a life of learning as frugal as that of the village .
The eastern concept of drawing from memory is high though she follows the western layer threaded approach .
Painting reminds her of the sacredness of vatta, or life, of arranging the seasonal flowers in ceramics made with crafted heart renderings and minds that are sublime and soaked in the simplicity of the daily lives offered to the divine. That it is not necessary to want to lead an artistic life so much as a life where the noises are less and you maneuver with nature’s rhythm, for when the season bursts, or you feel intense emotions you express, and the rest of the times you live in a unison of subtle habits, conjured inside the threshold of your hermit existence . Where you listen, and respond in momentary silences.

DEHI
Art Collective
Tseten Sherpa from Jhapa, Nepal had been dabbling with art as a hobby before he met Sagar Magar (an artist and a teacher) in 2012. Together they shared their thoughts about art and its impact, interacted with other artists from Jhapa as well as attended several exhibitions and workshops but found no seriousness in the field of art. Also, during the span of next two years they could not progress further in their artistic venture. Finally, in 2014, they wanted to inspire young minds to join hands with them in order to bring about a change in society through the medium of art. Their main objectives were to spread education, adventure and social reformation.
This venture was supported by many friends and became a success. DeHi thus came into being and today caters to art practices amongst the school and college students in and around Jhapa. Junu Pundi Lepcha
Storyteller
Junu Pundi Lepcha was born in Lingdok, living in Gangtok but essentially her roots are from a village called Bidyang in Kalimpong. The undeniable spark came to her courtesy of the Japanese animation movie, “Spirited Away”which hopelessly enthralled her with the intricate tapestry of magic in our natural world. It is what inspired her to find the magic in my ordinary spaces.
Growing up with her mom in Gangtok, and her dad’s early passing helped her deeply connect to Lepcha cause. Her short animated movie about Bidyang created for a workshop ‘Sacred Landscapes’, a deeply meaningful project that led her to finding connection to her roots.
As she delved into this unknown, She discovered so many iterations about her history, rather our history. It is her effort to save and share the stories of her people and every natural and super natural essence that lived and thrived with us. Sadly we are forgetting so much, not just the essence of our residence but also of ourselves. This just is her earnest effort to keep our stories alive, despite all the changes that life brings forth.
